Spencer said the show includes two students from Hardin County Schools who were taught magic tricks. “The community, participating schools and parents will be proud as well.”Īdkins said students who participate in the program seem “very excited to have an opportunity to show off the tricks and skills they have learned for the audience.” “I believe the show will be entertaining for all age groups, and Hardin County Schools is always proud when we can showcase talents and skills of our students in the classroom as well as on stage,” Adkins said. Plans are for a selection of the students learning the magic tricks to join Spencer on stage as a part of his performance. The Hocus Focus project links with Friday’s show. “It seems the show aims to boost certain qualities, such as self-esteem, in special needs students, but also seems to be aimed at general entertainment,” Adkins said. The educational aspect is just part of the package, though. “The program is an arts-integrated teaching approach which uses magic tricks to bring core content into the educational setting,” she said. Like the teachers, Adkins said, she is learning how the program works. “Many of the students in the research studies and in the current sites in Hardin County are students who are working on attention skills, sensory skills, fine-motor skills and other needs associated with learning disabilities,” said Kim Adkins, director of special education. Thirteen educators learned magic tricks to incorporate into their curriculum. In January, teachers from the Hardin County Schools system received training in the program. He holds certification in Autism studies and provides training and workshops around the world for his program. Spencer created the Hocus Focus project, an arts-based multidisciplinary curriculum, which integrates magic tricks with classroom study. “But we’re going to do it in a really unique way,” Spencer said. For example, everyone expects to see someone cut in half when they go to see a magic show. The classic magic feats will have a special twist, he said. “We’re going to be doing lots of classic magic as well as a lot of our own stuff,” Spencer said. It will be enjoyable for anyone who doesn’t mind suspending disbelief for a while and having their minds “messed with.” ![]() The show will be “all ages, all people, all abilities,” he said. ![]() ![]() “I’m excited about being there,” Spencer said. at the PAC, which is located at John Hardin High School in Elizabethtown. Spencer will offer “Hocus Focus with Spencer’s Theatre of Illusions,” Friday to audiences at Hardin County Schools Performing Arts Center. Entertainment and education are magic, as far as Kevin Spencer is concerned.
